The Iowa Central men came to Iowa Falls Wednesday night ranked 10th in the first NJCAA wrestling poll with three ranked individuals. Ellsworth Community College is currently unranked without a rated wrestler.
The Tritons women also entered Dittmer Gymnasium ranked sixth in the first poll with five rateds. The Panthers are not in the listed top 10, nor did they have any individuals in the rankings.
Neither dual result was a surprise, with the IC women opening the night with a 43-10 win and the Triton men handing the Panthers a 47-9 loss.
It didn't help that both ECC squads had open weights, with both surrendering 30 points in forfeits.
The Triton women won three of the five wrestled matches, but that didn't mean there wasn't something for the hosts to get loud about.
Freshman Julia Kane bumped up from 117 to 124 and trailed second-ranked Aniyah Dinwiddie 11-2 early in the second period before earning a reversal – worth one point in women's wrestling. She then hit a pair of takedowns, the second one leading to a pin.
The Panthers also got a fall from Amara Ehsa two matches earlier at 110. She was in a shallow 9-6 hole when she hit a takedown and a two-point tilt before settling in for a first period pin.
"We need to start doing some of the things that we practice religiously, but overall, I think we wrestled really tough, especially Julia," head women's coach Blake Walker said. "I bumped her up to 124 and she took out the number two girl in the country. That was a huge win for us, but I think we were competing through every situation which is what you want to see."
In the nightcap, ECC got wins from Giles Cowell at 174 and Aiden McFadden at 285.
Cowell's came via fall in the second period with a 10-0 lead against Cayden Van Meer. Second-rated Lawrence Rosario was a late scratch for the Tritons. McFadden scored four points late to widen the gap against Marcelo Rosario in his dual debut for the Panthers.
Both wins kept head coach Kaden Karns excited for his team.
"They've both been working hard," Karns said. "Aiden's been working to get down to 285, but he's got a lot to offer. And Giles was just being Giles. He gave us a heart attack in the middle of it but then racked up points and ended up sticking the kid. It's always interesting watching him because you never know exactly what you're going to see out of him, but you know it's going to be exciting."
