Council Bluffs, IA – Ellsworth Community College had multiple grapplers escape the North Central District meet Sunday in Council Bluffs to advance to the National Tournament March 7-8.
Three placed and just two, Joshua Berlin (165) and Giles Cowell (174), won a match.
Berlin opened with a pin against Jackson Turner of North Iowa, He was then pinned himself before sticking Iowa Western's Josiah Taylor in the consolation semi. He went on to lose by fall in the medal match.
Cowell also went 2-2, lost twice by tech fall. His wins came with a first round pin of North Iowa's Jonathan Krogman and an 18-14 consolation semi decision over Hawkeye's Austin Pfantz.
Berlin and Cowell were automatic national qualifiers, while Nick Fischer (157) and Aiden McFadden (285) were chosen as at-large bids after going 0-2 on Sunday.
"Obviously I would love to see all of my guys at the national tournament, but unfortunately it can't always work out that way," said ECC men's head coach Kaden Karns. "I am proud of all they have done this year and all they have been through. We have all grown together. Giles and Josh had a good day. They both ended in fourth and got some looks at some of the top guys in the nation. I am really excited to see what those two, along with Aiden and Fischer, can do at the national tournament."
