
IOWA FALLS, IOWA -- Ellsworth Community College coach Kory Vaught picked up his first win as a head coach on Saturday when the Panthers blanked Community Christian College from Michigan, 27-0, at Cadet Field. ECC scored in all 4 quarters in getting its first shutout victory since 2014.
A week after its offense was held in check by No. 1 rated Hutchinson CC, the Panthers had over 300 yards of total offense -- 166 on the ground and 170 through the air. The defense did its part with 4 interceptions and 9 sacks and ECC was 6-for-14 on 3rd down conversions after not having a single one the week before.
The first of 4 Ellsworth TDs came on the Panthers' first drive of the game. QB Brycen Davis had a 45-scamper that helped set up a 13-yard scoring toss to Jaali Parker. Alex Budina tacked on a 32-yard field goal at the end of the 2nd period and the Panthers went up 9-0 at intermission. Calvin Swinney's 2-yard run accounted for the first of 2 3rd-period scores, set up by a 33-yard run by Davis. Later in the 3rd, Davis hit Parker from 11 yards out for his 2nd scoring throw. Steven Werking completed a 22-yard pass to Jaylon Banks for the final TD in the 4th quarter.
Davis was 10-15 through the air for 98 yards and Werking completed 5-of-7 for 68 yards. Davis also ran for 68 yards on 7 attempts, Nigel Cheeks gained 32 yards on 6 totes and Swinney went for 32 yards on 8 carries. Michael Walker caught 3 passes and Mason Walthart snared one for 40 yards.
Rayshon Kennedy led the tackle chart for the 2nd straight week with 6 stops and he added 1.5 sacks. Adrian Palos was credited with 5 tackles and Robert Harris with 2 sacks. Sam Mitchell, Xavian Andrews, Justin Long and Jaiden Tandy all intercepted passes.
The Panthers will battle their 2 ICCAC foes the next 2 weeks, both at home. They'll take on Iowa Central Sept. 16 and Iowa Western Sept. 23.
