COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA -- In what has been a brutal start to the season schedule-wise, the Ellsworth Panthers ran into another highly-ranked foe on Saturday and were shut out by No. 3 Iowa Western, 52-0. The Reivers scored in every quarter while holding the ECC offense to just 75 yards and 5 first downs.
Iowa Western jumped out to a 14-0 advantage after one quarter and doubled the lead by halftime. They added 3 third-quarter TDs and put the clamps on a Panther offense that had scored 32 points the week before against Iowa Central.
ECC again had trouble getting anything going with the ground game, totaling only 8 rushing yards. They were forced to punt 10 times and had the football for just over 20 minutes.
Isaac Whisenand completed 9-of-19 passes for the Panthers, gaining 66 yards. DaMyles Clark Tate was the leading receiver with 3 catches for 19 yards. The Reivers' defense did a good job of keeping ECC's Malcolm Gillie in check. The conerence's top offensive player last week after grabbing 4 scoring passes against Iowa Central, had just one catch for 7 yards. Chris Ndushabandi, Dominic McCarren and Dedric Flint all had 2 receptions. Trent Lane carried the ball 12 times for 23 yards.
Jeremiah Gill led the Panthers on defense with 7 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Ellsworth has played 3 of the top 7 teams in the nation in the NJCAA Division I rankings as well as going up against the country's top DIII team in the Panthers' first 4 games. They will have their homecoming game next Saturday when Coffeyville (Kans.) comes to Iowa Falls.
