Panthers Win Two Over the Weekend

Over the course of two days, Ellsworth Community College played in two separate tournaments and faced three opponents.

On Friday, the Panthers competed in the DMACC Tournament in Boone and fell in a five set thriller to Illinois Central Community College. Then on Saturday, they headed north to the NIACC Tournament in Mason City where they won both of their matches in sweeps. ECC improved to 15-9 overall on the season.

The Panthers had a rollercoaster of a match on Friday at DMACC versus the Cougars. ECC won the first set 25-20 and nearly had the second game. Illinois Central won set two, 32-30, and along with it the momentum. The Cougars went on to win the third 25-18. The Panthers were able to keep the match going with the 25-22 victory before falling in the fifth, 15-11.

ECC tallied 51 kills in the loss, led by Juliana Nunez with 16. Ana Cuartero had 13 and Taylor Ross was also in double figures with 11. Collectively, the team hit just .155 for the five sets. Defensively, they nearly topped triple digits with 96 digs. Four were in double figures, with Cuartero tallying 28 and Ludine Charron 25.

ECC then traveled to the NIACC Tournament on Saturday and won both of their matches. The first was against ICCAC foe Southwestern Community College. The Panthers earned the 25-18, 25-17, 25-13 sweep. Nunez led the offensive attack with 11 kills. ECC's serving was hot with 13 aces, led by Nunez with five and Cuartero added three – the squad had just five service errors.

The Panthers closed out the weekend defeating St. Ambrose JV 25-13, 28-26, 25-18. ECC hit .268 as a team with 42 kills. Cuartero was tops in the hit category with 18 and a kill efficiency of .424. Nunez was also in double figures hitting with 12.

Cuartero finished with 40 kills and seven ace serves, while Nunez added 39 hits and also had seven aces over three matches. Elitsa Peneva distributed 110 assists. Defensively, Charron led with 65 digs.
