IOWA FALLS, IOWA -- In one last tuneup before the start of postseason play, Marshalltown CC knocked off Ellsworth CC in both halves of a Wednesday doubleheader. The Tigers pushed across a run in the top of the 8th to take game one, 7-6, then scored a 9-2 triumph in the second game.
The opener went to extra innings after Ellsworth scored three times in the bottom of the 7th to knot the score at 6-all. MCC won it in the first extra frame. ECC amassed 13 hits, including 3 each by Gintare Paskocimaite, Lauren Brennan and Nevaeh Dice. Breanna Howard and Delaney Vetter had 2 hits apiece. Dice knocked in 3 of ECC's 6 runs. Vetter went the distance in the circle, giving up 11 hits and striking out 8.
Paskocimaite's 11th home run of the spring accounted for one of the 2 Ellsworth runs in the nightcap. She scored the other run with Lauren Brennan getting the RBI. Grace Gordon and Lili Ruiz both doubled for the Panthers. Starter Cheyanne Collins worked 3 innings and gave way to Asa Kesinger who finished up. None of the 5 runs charged to Collins were earned.
Now it's on to the postseason for ECC with the Region XI-B tournament starting Friday in Cedar Rapids. The Panthers, seeded 6th, draw the No. seed, Kirkwood CC, in their opening game.
