Ellsworth Edges No. 7 Kirkwood in Softball

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA -- Ellsworth used a pair of home runs to come from behind and upset 7th-ranked Kirkwood, 3-2, in the opener of an ICCAC doubleheader on Wednesday.  The Eagles then came back with a vengeance to gain a split, winning 20-2.

Kirkwood grabbed a lead in game one with a pair of 3rd inning runs.  Chelsea Buck cut the deficit in half on a solo homer in the 4th.  Ally Sparks then delivered the game-winning blow when she swatted a two-run home run in the 6th with Buck scoring ahead of Sparks.  Kaysee Dale, Mya Mathes, Kailey Becker and Chloe Roberts also had hits for ECC while Buck and Gwen Hovorka both had their first of two two-hit games for the day.  Delaney Vetter pitched a superb game for the Panthers, scattering seven hits while walking four and striking out seven.  The victory was the freshman's 9th of the year.

The second game saw KCC plate two runs in the first two innings, then have 8-run outbursts the next two frames.  The ECC runs were scored in the 2nd and 4th innings.  Hovorka had a solo shot and Mathes, Grace Gordon, Roberts and Cheyanne Collins produced hits.  Hovorka scored both runs and Sierra Robinson drove in one.  Buck, Hovorka, Mathes and Roberts all had doubles.  Roberts, Sparks and Collins shared the pitching duties.

The Panthers are right back in action Thursday when they host Northeast (Neb.) in a doubleheader.
