SCC Sweeps Ellsworth Baseball

WEST BURLINGTON, IOWA -- Southeastern CC fought off an Ellsworth CC rally in the final inning of the first game of a weekend series between the two conference rivals and then went on to take the next three games to finish off a sweep.  The Blackhawks won 3-2 and 12-0 on Saturday and followed up those victories with 7-2 and 14-5 verdicts Sunday.

ECC was down 3-0 entering the last inning in the series opener before Bryce Hall and Fabian Dumey came around to score in the top of the 7th.  But the rally ended there and the Panthers suffered the tough-luck loss.  Carlos Aranda, Trey Morris, Hall, Kainoa Torres, Dumey and TJ Truso all had hits for ECC.  Starting pitcher Gavin Busby had a strong outing, scattering six hits and striking out three in five innings of work.  Jason Moist pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Panthers were held to five hits in the second game -- doubles by Aranda and Javier Melendez and singles from Torres, Ryan Boothe and Alexis Ruiz -- and were blanked.  Charlie Jaeger started and lasted four innings before giving way to Simon Victoriano and Moist.

Defense was a problem in Sunday's contests, the Panthers allowing a total of 10 unearned runs and committing five errors in game two.  Both starting pitchers were victimized by the defense.  Miguel Baez went the distance in the opener and permitted only three earned runs with nine Ks.  Zach Carlsen, in the second game, also threw six strong innings and only two of the eight runs he gave up were earned.  He, like Baez, fanned nine.

SCC jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings in the first game.  Ellsworth got their runs in the 3rd courtesy of RBI hits by Torres and Ybrahim QuevedoVictor Lara had a two-hit game for the Panthers and Torres and Truso scored the runs.

ECC pushed across two runs in the top of the 2nd in the nightcap to go on top 3-1 before the Blackhawks answered with five in the bottom of the 2nd.  Aranda, Melendez and Truso provided two hits each, Boothe knocked in two runs and Lara and Truso one apiece.  Carlsen shared the pitching chores with Matt Nolan and Cooper Johnson.

The Panthers (16-32) will close out their home schedule Wednesday when they host NIACC in a doubleheader.
