MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA -- The Ellsworth CC baseball team extended their early-season winning streak to six with a 12-1 rout of Marshalltown CC in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader, then MCC came back for a 10-7 verdict in game two.
ECC took a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings in the first game, then got the offense cranked up with nine runs over their final three at-bats, starting with a five-run 5th inning.
The Panthers used a 14-hit attack with Jake Kostenbauer getting three knocks and Victor Lara, Trey Morris, Jacoby Endreas and Ybrahim Quevedo two apiece. Quevedo's hits were both doubles and Endreas added a two-base hit. Fabian Dumey had his second three-RBI game in a row and Quevedo and Kostenbauer drove in two each. Four different Panthers -- Lara, Carlos Aranda, Endreas and Quevedo -- scored two runs and Bryce Hall walked three times. Trey Morris was solid on the hill for ECC, working six innings and permitting only five hits and one run with a walk and four Ks for his second win of the spring. Simon Victoriano finished with a scoreless 7th.
In the nine-inning nightcap, Ellworth tallied three runs in the 4th to go on top 5-4 and, after a four-run 5th by the home team, the Panthers moved to within one at 8-7 in the 7th before the Tigers scored insurance runs in their next two at-bats. Aranda got three of his team's nine hits. Lara, Quevedo, Kostenbauer and Dumey had runs-batted-in. Seven different players scored a run. Morris doubled twice and Aranda swiped two bases. Alex Bantam and Matt Nolan did the pitching, Bantam going 2 1/3 innings and Nolan 5 2/3. Nolan fanned seven. Bantam took the loss.
ECC, with a season record of 8-6, travels to play Iowa Western in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.
