IOWA FALLS, IOWA -- Coffeyville CC scored in every quarter and spoiled Ellsworth's homecoming contest on Saturday as the visitors from Kansas defeated the Panthers, 31-7.
Coffeyville scored first after picking off a Joshua Bauer pass, one of 5 interceptions recorded by the Red Ravens. A 27-yard scoring pass on the first play after the turnover opened the scoring. A 51-yard field goal accounted for the only points of the second period and gave CCC a 10-0 halftime advantage.
The Red Ravens then went 60 yards on 6 plays after taking the 2nd half kickoff to increase their lead. Ellsworth took advantage of a Coffeyville turnover to notch their only points of the game. ECC recovered a fumble and scored in 2 plays -- a 49-yard pass to Darrius Jackson and a 2-yard scoring toss from Bauer to Malcolm Gillie in the corner of the end zone. Leonardo Araujo added the PAT to get Ellsworth to within 17-7.
On the next possession, Coffeyville went 56 yards in just 3 plays and the 32-yard run that capped the drive made it 24-7. The scoring ended when CCC put together a 13-play drive in the 4th quarter.
Bauer completed 18 passes in 39 attempts for 183 yards with five picks. Jackson caught 7 passes for 115 yards and Aghogho Eyafe grabbed 4 for 50 yards. Gillie also had 4 receptions, including the TD catch, and Trent Lane had a pair of catches for 12 yards.
The Panthers netted only 18 rushing yards on 21 attempts. Ernesto Rios was the leading rusher with 21 yards on 8 carries. Lane had 8 for 14.
Jaden Davis, Elijah Johson and JacQuez Smith all had sacks for the ECC defense. Davis contribued 4 tackles for loss and Johnson had a forced fumble. Malcolm Bryant and Shamar Holt recovered fumbles and Dedric Flint provided 3 pass breakups. Michael Acri led the tackle chart with 9 and Davis added 8.
The Panthers, still looking for their first victory of the season, play at Highland (Kans.) next Saturday.
