Matthews & Poetzl earn ICCAC football honors

Ellsworth Community College's Terry Matthews and Jacob Poetzl have received Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week Honors for Sept. 9-15. Matthews is a wide receiver from Geismar, LA and Poetzl is a defensive end from Marinette, WI.

ICCAC noted that in a game of limited offensive productions last week, Ellsworth needed the big play ability of Matthews in the biggest way. Matthews, the Panthers' punt returner, returned three punts for a total of 38 yards, none bigger than his last one. In the fourth quarter of the game against Dodge City, with the game tied at 8, he took a punt 56-yards the other way for six-points, the go-ahead score. Matthews leads the team in all-purpose yards per game with 55 per contest.

In the 15-8 win over Dodge City, Ellsworth's defense played a huge part in securing the team's first win of the 2019 season. Poetzl made three huge plays that put the Panthers in position to win. He finished the game with 3.5 sacks totaling a loss of 30 yards for the Conquistadors; they were his first sacks of the season. Poetzl has upped his total to nine tackles, 4.5 of them coming for a loss.
