Panther football continues winning streak

The Ellsworth Community College football team took down #4 Butler Community College on Saturday by a margin of 36-28, making it the 5th win for the Panther football team in the last five weeks.

ECC was first on the board with a 1-yard run by Xavier Washpun to put 6 on the board. Jerry Jones then made a rush to get the 2-point conversion. However, Butler went touchdown for touchdown with the Panthers in the first half, taking the teams into a 22-21 halftime score with the Panthers ahead.

Jones caught 80-yard and 40-yard passes from Jujuan Young-Battle in the first half, and Young-Battle had a 2-point conversion to account for the Panthers' first half points.

Washpun scored the only touchdown for either team in the 3rd quarter with another 1-yard run; DJ Loving converted for the 2-point conversion.

The 4th quarter had each team scoring one touchdown. Jones pulled in a huge 24-yard pass from Young-Battle late in the quarter. Butler was the last to score with 2:52 left in the game, but that touchdown but it wasn't enough as the Panthers took the win 36-28.

Young-Battle threw for 356 yards. Washpun rushed for 133 yards, including his two touchdown completions. Jones averaged 30.8 yards receiving for his 3 touchdowns. On the defensive side, the Panthers were led by Ryan Guthrie and Alex Caldwell, who had 7 tackles each. Dontrell Johnson had 2 interceptions for ECC.

The Panthers will play in the Graphic Edge Bowl on Sunday, Dec. 6; game time is yet to be determined.
