Panther volleyball finishes successful season

The Ellsworth Community College volleyball team finished the year 16-16, which is an improvement over last year's record of 17-23. They also finished higher in the conference standings than last year, with a 6th place finish.

"We had a lot of good things happen this season, but fell a little short in the first round of regional play," commented ECC Head Coach Melanie Suljic. "Ultimately Iowa Central and DMACC advanced to the national tournament. We went 5 sets with both schools and barely lost to DMACC by a score of 13-15 in the 5th set."

Stat leaders for the team this year included: Mary Goergen with 319 kills; April Jones with 223 kills and 81 blocks; Keisha Machado with 269 kills and 298 digs; Cristina Negron with 647 set assists and 31 aces; Darayliz Santiago with 453 set assists; Madison Grabau with 38 aces and 399 digs; Paola Soto with 46 aces and 266 digs and Allison Kuennen with 43 blocks.

Sophomore Madison Grabau accumulated 772 digs for her career (2013-2014) and moved into the 4th spot in the ECC record books. She beat out the next in the list by 114 career digs.

Freshman Mary Goergen received Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) honors. She was awarded 2nd Team All-Region and All-Conference Honorable Mention.

"There was a lot of talent on this team and we are hoping to see some of the sophomores continue their academic and playing careers at a four-year school next year," stated Suljic. "There should be a talented group of sophomores returning next year to carry the next generation of ECC volleyball to success."
