Hurford claims second straight tournament title

The ECC wrestlers put up a strong performance at the Loras Open on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Panthers sent four wrestlers to the finals, claiming one champion and six total place winners.

Matt Hurford claimed his second straight tournament title at 184 pounds. Hurford rallied off four straight victories by technical fall, fall, 9-1 major decision, and a decisive 4-1 decision over 7th ranked Quinton Swanberg of Iowa Western. Hurford has compiled a perfect 7-0 record on the year.

Also reaching the championships were Da'Wayne Robertson (125), Jacon Igartua (133), and Sharod Wilson (197).

Robertson made his first three matches look easy with a win by fall and two by major decision before falling by a slim 4-2 margin in the finals. Igartua picked up four straight victories, with three by major decision en route to his first finals appearance of his young career. Wilson made his second straight finals match with three straight dominant victories before falling in the finals to 7th ranked Tim McDonald.

Other placers included Kenard Washington, 4th at 174 lbs, and Dortanyia McIntyre, 4th at 285 lbs. Both wrestlers had four victories on the day.
