Nate Alvarez Joins the Ellsworth Wrestling Staff

Coach Alvarez started wrestling in 8th grade. He did not learn to love wrestling until his sophomore year of high school and therefore had to work hard to catch up to his peers. With help from his coaches, he made great strides but fell short of achieving his high school goals. After high school, he attended Newman University (NCAA Division 2) where he was a 2x National Qualifier under Coach Mark Stovall. In his junior year, he transferred to Bacone College (NAIA) in Oklahoma where he was nationally ranked. He later transferred to Wichita State(NCWA) for his last year and a half of college when Coach Stovall attempted to start a program at WSU.

He graduated from WSU with a bachelor's in sports management in 2011. After graduating he became the assistant coach at Circle High (4A) in Towanda. He was there one year before becoming the assistant coach at Maize South(5A). In 2016, He started coaching for Maize Wrestling Club when his son started wrestling.  In 2020 Coach Alvarez became the head coach at Andover Central High School (5A) where he attempted to rebuild a program that was once a dominant program. In 2022 Coach Alvarez began the Jaguar wrestling club which immediately saw success. In just a year they saw 7 All-Americans, 8 state qualifiers, and 3 state placers.

His approach to wrestling focuses on using the sport to create better athletes, well-rounded students, and productive members of society who not only believe in themselves but believe in working hard to achieve their goals. He believes that wrestling provides life lessons that no other sport can. Coach Alvarez has a Bachelor's in Sport Management, as well as a Master's degree in business, management, and teaching.

"Nate brings so much to the table coaching-wise. He has accomplished so much already and has played a big part in developing programs throughout Kansas. With Nate having those ties to Kansas, you can expect to see a big increase in Kansas wrestlers at Ellsworth. With Nate's ability to start and grow a club program, Nate will also be vital in developing and growing our already established RTC program," said Victor Coronado, Head Wrestling Coach.
