Panther Men Split a Pair in Mason City

MASON CITY, IOWA -- Ellsworth got a win and suffered its first loss in playing twice in the Konigsmark Klassic over the weekend.  The Panthers, who defeated Bryant & Stratton (WI) earlier in the week in their season opener, knocked off Sisseton Wahpeton, 92-63, Friday at NIACC before a big second half allowed Milwaukee Area Tech to defeat ECC, 87-60, on Saturday.

In the first-day victory, Ellsworth put four starters in double-figures, paced by Richie Warren's 20 points.  Warren also led ECC on the glass with 11 boards.  Ra'mir Scott added 15 points, Tom Stanley 14 and Rich Ashu 10 to go along with a team-high 4 assists.  Junior Bodden, the only member of the starting five who didn't reach double-figures in points, picked off 10 rebounds, 6 on the offensive board.  The Panthers got 29 bench points, a total that included 8 by Khedric Oliver and 6 each by Mateo Martinez and Chase Smith.  Ellsworth drained 11-of-27 3-points tries.  Stanley made 4 threes and Scott 3.  And ECC hit 48 percent from the field, making 36-of-75 attempts.

Milwaukee Area Tech grabbed a 38-36 halftime edge against the Panthers, then outscored ECC, 49-24, in the final period to pull away for the win.  The Ellsworth cause was hindered by 29 turnovers, many of them in the second half.  The Panthers shot a respectable 45 percent, made 6-of-11 shots from behind the arc and outrebounded MATC, 41-40.  Warren led the way in the scoring column with 15 points and pulled down a team-best 8 rebounds.  Scott scored 11 points.

Ellsworth now has a four-game homestand that begins with a contest against North Central Missouri College on Tuesday.  The William Penn JV comes to Ditmer Gym this Friday, the Waldorf JV next Sunday, and the Loras JV Nov. 16.
