Panthers, Hawks Divide Two

IOWA FALLS, IOWA -- The week after the Ellsworth baseball team was shut out in both games of a doubleheader at Northeast (Neb.), the Panthers scored 12 runs when the teams played two at Cadet Field.  But after taking game one, 7-3, ECC saw Northeast put 13 runs on the board in the nightcap to gain a split in the Tuesday ICCAC twinbill with a 13-5 decision.

Ellsworth broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the 3rd, added another in the 4th and then broke the game open with three in the 5th to claim the opener.  Ybrahim Quevedo singled in a run in the 1st and then belted a 3-run double in the 5th to lead the ECC offense.  Victor Lara had two hits and scored twice and Trey Morris, Carlos Aranda, Kainoa Torres and Zeb Wede all had a hit.  Morris upped his team-leading batting average to .388 on the day.  The freshman righthander also posted his 3rd pitching victory of the spring, going the first five innings and permitting only four hits and one run.  He walked one and fanned three.  Isaac Rohde went an inning in relief and the Panthers then turned things over to closer Cooper Johnson, who K'd two in the 7th.

Northeast raced away to a quick 7-0 lead in the second game and left town with the split.  ECC was held to five hits.  Jacoby Endreas and Ryan Boothe supplied the offensive highlight with back-to-back homers in the 4th inning.  Lara had a hit and walked three times and the other hits were from Aranda and Torres.  Three Ellsworth pitchers -- Jason Moist, Simon Victoriano and Broderick Bittle -- combined to allow 16 hits and 13 earned runs.

The Panthers will be idle until a four-game series at Indian Hills CC this weekend.
