ECC volleyball back-to-back matchups

Ellsworth Community College competed in two volleyball matches last week, on back-to-back nights.

The Panthers started out on the road at Hawkeye Community College on Wednesday. While ECC outhit the Redtails, it was the hosts that won in four sets: 22-25, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-14. 

The Panthers tallied 51 kills in the loss, led by 22 from Monique Vanzin. Kaitlyn Baer also had double digit hits with 11.

Hawkeye was able to maneuver around ECC's front row as the Panthers tallied just one block, a solo one from Vitoria Kazanovski. On the other hand, the Redtails put up four solo and two assists on ECC's hitters. Hawkeye's back row also notched 77 digs against the Panthers. Four were in double figures, led by Haylee Keune with 23. Kazanovski led the visitors with 10 passes, followed by Baer with eight.

The next night, ECC hosted a very tall Marshalltown Community College. The visiting Tigers dispatched the hosts in a sweep: 25-14, 25-8 and 25-10.

The Panthers had just 13 kills, led by Vanzin with six and Baer added five. Leading the back row, Baer finished with 20 passes. 

The losses push ECC to 2-17 overall and 0-4 in the conference. Southwestern Community College is also looking for its first league win, the two will face off on Oct. 9.
