Second Quarter Dooms Ellsworth Women at Southwestern

Creston, Iowa -- After playing Southwestern CC on even terms for the first quarter (16-16 after one), the Ellsworth women suffered through a cold-shooting second period and couldn't recover in a 69-49 loss to the Spartans Saturday afternoon.  The hosts outscored ECC, 22-7, in the second period to take a 38-23 lead at the half and although the Panthers were able to play SWCC almost-even over the final two quarters they dropped their sixth game of the season.

Sophomore Kevonda Primes came off the bench to lead ECC in scoring.  Primes made 5-of-9 field goal attempts and all four of her free throws in a 14-point effort.  She was the lone double-figure scorer -- Ellie Barrows added nine points and Dreasha Talley eight.  Talley also grabbed eight rebounds, the same number as teammate Autumn Shull, who also blocked a couple of shots.  Victaeja Leavy provided three steals.  The Panthers made 19 of their 22 foul shots for their best effort of the season in that category.

Ellsworth goes to Cedar Rapids Wednesday to face off against the nation's second-ranked DII team in Kirkwood, then comes back home for a game against Southeastern CC at Dittmer Gymnasium next Saturday.
