Ed Geitz has been a constant figure on an athletic bench for a total of 28 years, but has now made the hard decision to resign from coaching ECC women's basketball.
Geitz was an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach for seven years, Head Volleyball Coach for six years (with five years overlapping men's basketball), and Women's Head Basketball Coach for 11 years (with one year overlapping volleyball). All of this has occurred in the 18 years he has been teaching at Ellsworth Community College. He began as a Physical Education Instructor and then moved on to Education, which he will continue teaching.
During his 11 years of coaching women's basketball, Geitz has had 15 NJCAA Academic All-Americans and will have a possible 1-2 more this year; 21 All-Region selections; 28 transfers to 4-year institutions to continue their playing and academic careers, and a graduation rate approximately 90-95%.
The high point for Coach Geitz has always been the relationships he has built with the young women he has coached. "Through the years I have stayed in contact with so many of my former players and I really value those relationships."
During his volleyball coaching, one of the highlights that stands out for him was beating DMACC to go to the semi-finals. "We had an awesome crowd! They were so loud and it was the first time we had gone to the semi-finals."
Pinpointing just one highlight from his basketball coaching career was more difficult: "I have had a lot of great moments in basketball. What I probably appreciate the most is being able to take lots of kids from different backgrounds and making them into better players and friends that they would never have met if they hadn't come to Ellsworth."
ECC Athletic Director Nate Forsyth commented, "I would like to personally thank Ed for his commitment and service to the ECC athletic department. He is an asset to our college as well the community. I am loking forward to working with him in the future."
Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Justin Weiland will be the acting Interim Head Coach.
