The Ellsworth Community College men's basketball team celebrated National Reading Day on Jan. 22 by visiting Alden Elementary School.

National Reading Day is an annual event, which celebrates and encourages reading by younger children and is recognized in thousands of schools all around the United States. This literacy event is designed to help Pre-K through third grade students develop the literacy foundation they need to become lifelong learners. Schools, libraries, non-profit groups, and parents participate in a variety of activities with younger readers on National Reading Day.

Six members of the basketball team visited Alden Elementary and read the stories "Silly Zoo is All I Can Say" and did several writing activities through the "Write Your Way" program with the kindergarten thru third grade students. After finishing their activities they joined the elementary students for lunch in the cafeteria.

"It was a great day at Alden Elementary," says ECC Head Men's Basketball Coach, Troy Muilenburg. "I am not sure who had more fun—the students or the basketball players. We are planning on visiting again in a couple of weeks to follow up with the activities that we did together."
