ECC football falls in last seconds

With no time left on the clock, College of DuPage threw up a Hail Mary pass caught in the corner of the end zone as the Chaparral's defeated Ellsworth Community College 35-33.

DuPage held a 13-0 advantage heading into the half. The Panthers were able to cut that deficit early in the third quarter on a 24 yard pass from AJ Payne to Will Weidemann. The two went back and forth scoring, with ECC (1-4) finding the end zone three times in the stanza. Shaundarious Kimbrough broke free for a 69 yard score and Johnny Jean had a 25 yard fumble recovery.

To start the fourth quarter, it was 27-21, Chaparral's lead. Neither team scored through the first 13 minutes of the final quarter. With 1:32 left in the game, ECC drove 76 yards down field. The only pass of the drive, a 31-yard pass from Payne to Terry Matthews, was good for the touchdown. Just like that, the Panthers led 28-27.

The advantage was short lived as DuPage (2-3) received the ball at midfield and in seven plays scored the go-ahead touchdown. Though the two-point conversion failed, the hosts controlled the game with the 33-28 lead with 41 seconds left.

On the ensuing kickoff, Scott got the ball and ran all the way back (75 yards) for the score. With the point after, the visitors held the 35-33 lead with just 17.3 seconds to go.

Lazerick Eatman returned the kickoff 27 yards as the Chaparral's started their final drive on ECC's 45-yardline. A 13-yard gain set up a first and 10 from the 32 with 5.4 seconds left.

DuPage's quarterback took the snap, stepped back and heaved the ball to the left corner of the end zone. The Chaparral's receiver came down with the ball and the win.
