Panthers face Highland in 2018 home opener

The Ellsworth Community College football team held their first home game on Saturday, Sept. 1 hosting Highland Community College. The Panthers challenged Highland at every opportunity but fell one touchdown short of a victory falling 17-10.

The Panthers were first on the board with a field goal by Adijan Muhamedjic (Waterloo, IA) early in the first quarter. The Panther defense would hold Highland scoreless until right before half when they would tie up the score with a field goal of their own.

Both teams would remain at three until ECC's Byron Jarett (Des Moines, IA) completed a pass to Anthony Evans (Omaha, NE) who ran the ball in for a 25-yard touchdown. Muhamedjic's kick was good to put the Panthers in the lead 10-3. Highland would come back and tie the game again at the end of the third quarter. A late touchdown would give Highland the 17-10 victory.

Jarrett and Mark Wright (Carrollton, GA) split duties at the quarterback position for the Panthers. Jarrett had 139 yards and 1 touchdown and Wright had 62 yards. Wright was leading rusher with 79 yards. Evans led the Panthers in receiving with 63 yards.

The Panther defense was led by Laweson Cook (Dacula, GA) who had 9 tackles with 8 of those being solo. Ali Shockley (Rock Hill, SC) followed closely with 8 tackles and an interception.

ECC will remain at home hosting Garden City Community College on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1 pm.
