Panther defense steps up

The Ellsworth Community College football team took down #18 College of DuPage on Saturday in a 19-14 victory. The Panthers defense stepped up in the win with 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and on interception.

In the first quarter of the game Paris Chambers ran in a 3-yard touchdown for the only score in the quarter for either team. The Panthers would score one more time in the half with a second quarter blocked punt by Naeem Smith and a recovery in the endzone by Cory Siders. The Panthers would end the half with a 13-7 lead over College of DuPage.

The third quarter the Panther defense held College of DuPage scoreless and Jack Lemke kicked a 33-yard field goal to give the Panthers 3 points. The fourth quarter College of DuPage had one touchdown but the Panthers held them off with Lemke hitting another 23-yard field goal that was set up by another blocked punt for ECC by Levester Harris and Smith recovered and returned to the 5-yard line.

Chambers threw for 13 completitions for 143 yards for the game. He also rushed for a touchdown. Ethan Barnett led rushing with 46 yards. Drew Greenhaw led receivers with 88 yards.

Deanjelo Anderson led the defense with 6 tackles and all of them were solo tackles. Javonte Arius, Josh Belle and Robert Odeneal each had 5 tackles. Arius also forced one fumble and also had a fumble recovery. CJ Burress forced a fumble.  Keonte Schad forced 2 fumbles and had 2 fumble recoveries.

Odeneal and Isaiah Childs each had 2 sacks in the game along with Jahid Beamon and Demetrius Caddell who each had 1 sack. Nik Ricks had .5 sacks.

The Panthers will be on the road next Saturday, Oct. 7 against Independence Community College with kick-off at 7 pm.
