ECC cheer brings home awards

Ellsworth Community College Cheer attended UCA College Spirit Camp August 1-6 at Wisconsin Dells Chula Vista Resort for the first time in program history. This camp is the largest college cheerleading/dance/mascot camp in the country with D1, D2, and D3 co-ed and all-girl collegiate teams attending yearly to prepare for college gameday.

The camp focuses on sideline chants, band songs, timeout rally routines, stunts, and overall collegiate crowd-leading skills for teams taught by UCA/UDA staff. Varsity Spirit Corporation is headquartered in Memphis, TN and is the largest global cheer/dance corporation hosting camps, clinics, and competitions.

ECC cheer earned two superior blue ribbons and one excellent red ribbon during daily evaluations. On the final day of camp, teams compete in either D1 or D2 coed/all-girl divisions for Gameday Championships Awards. ECC competed in All-girl Division 2 and placed 3rd in Fight Song and Gameday Rally Routine. ECC also earned the Collegiate Program Most Improved Award for skill level progressions from camp start to finish in D2 All-girl. Michigan State earned Most Improved in D2 coed. Avila (KS) won 1st place in D2 All-girl Gameday.

Other collegiate programs from Iowa attending camp in D2 were Indian Hills, Kirkwood, and Upper Iowa University. D1 were University of Northern Iowa and University of Iowa. Many other programs from the Big Ten and other conferences were at camp.

"I am proud of this team. We were newcomers to college camp and the smallest program there. We proved why we were there, to learn and advance our traditions for Ellsworth. They were outstanding, small yet mighty. This team has set a precedent for future growth," commented ECC Head Coach Katie Reed.
